This year's curriculum theme is:
We Are Unitarian Universalists Exploring…
Who We Are & Where We Came From
This year we’ll explore what it means to be UU with our rich history, free thinking leaders, and continuously unfolding understanding of ourselves in relation to the wider world.
In 2012-13 we'll explore.... Other World Religions and Traditions
In 2013-14 we'll explore... Our Jewish and Christian Heritage
Our Preschool through 5th Grade Sunday School Program includes a monthly rotation of children’s worship, religious education (RE) classes, and social action projects. We also offer nursery care for babies and very young children.
During most of the year, we offer Preschool through 5th Grade classes at 9:30 and 4th Grade through 8th Grade classes at 11:30. We do not offer classes for Preschool through 3rd grade during our 11:30 worship service. During the summer months, we offer religious education for children during the 10:30 a.m. service.
Nursery Care and Preschool Class
Teacher Training & Supervision
Nursery Care
Nursery care is provided by professional staff during both services for babies and very young children.
Preschool (ages 3 and 4)
We offer a Preschool Class at 9:30 every Sunday. This class follows a three year rotation of age-appropriate UU curricula to help our youngest Sunday School students learn about and feel comfortable with their family’s chosen church and tradition.
Pre-K through 5th Grade
We offer Pre-K thru 5th Grade RE Programming during both the 9:30 and 11:30 services. Each month these students participate in a rotation of classes and activities that includes:
- Religious Education (RE) Classes (grouped by grade)
- Chalice Chapel (multi-age children’s worship and activities)
- Social Action (multi-age learning and projects)
- Art Assemblies (multi-age art projects led by local artists)
- Multigenerational Worship (worship services for all ages)
RE Summer Program
During the summer months, UUCSS holds one worship service at 10:30 and offers Religious Education Programming for Pre-K through 5th Grade students during that time. Nursery Care is available for infants and young children, and middle and high school youth are invited to attend the worship service or help out with the RE Program.
Teacher Training and Supervision
All classes and activities for children and youth are taught and led by dedicated volunteers who adhere to our UUCSS Child Safety Policy and are supervised, trained, and supported by our Director of Religious Education.
Registration
We welcome children and youth visitors to our Religious Education Program, and we encourage parents to fill out a special Visitor Form when you come so that we may contact you and answer any questions. After attending for several Sundays, we ask that parents register each child and youth by filling out a Registration Form (pdf form) and returning it to the Director of Religious Education, UUCSS, 10309 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring MD 20903 or e-mail it to dre@uucss.org.
