Take Chances! Make Mistakes! Get Messy!

In our first worship service together, I lifted up the role model of Ms. Frizzle from the children’s book and television series “The Magic School Bus.” Ms. Frizzle encourages her students to learn about science through direct experience. Ms. Frizzle’s motto, “Take chances! Make Mistakes! Get Messy!” is also good advice for a congregation during an interim period. Our year of shared ministry is a great opportunity to try new things, even if we don’t have any guarantees of success. Because we trust in the inherent worth and dignity of every person, we have the freedom to make amends after making a mistake without feeling that mistakes are permanent emblems of unworthiness. This helps give us the courage to apologize and make things right. For a congregation, getting messy means growing toward authenticity, and making space where we can be vulnerable. This year will be exciting, fun, challenging, and full of discovery. Seat belts, everyone!
