The Unitarian Universalist Church of Silver Spring (UUCSS) is seeking an Interim Director of Religious Education (IDRE) to join our congregation as a senior staff member in October 2019.  UUCSS has been a Welcoming Congregation since 1996, has been accredited as a Green Sanctuary, has an active Racial Justice Task Force, and supports deaf access to congregational life, including weekly ASL interpretation during worship services. We presently have 239 members, 151 friends, and we average about 70 children and youth in weekly Religious Education programs.

We now seek to hire an experienced Unitarian Universalist interim religious educator professional to guide the work of reimagining our lifespan faith development program. The IDRE position is also the senior staff person responsible for the implementation and development of the religious education program for children and youth. A complete job description is available here.

During the first year of employment, the IDRE will provide leadership for interim work in the realm of lifespan faith development, including designing a process with the Interim Minister, the Board, and/or the transition team, to help the congregation consider key development tasks which address heritage, mission, leadership, connection, and the future of religious education. In year two, the IDRE will continue this work with the new, settled senior minister toward advancing lifespan faith development across the congregation. Over both years, the position involves running an effective, excellent religious education program for children, youth and their families. Major areas of responsibility include implementing the Religious Education program with the Children and Youth Religious Education Committee and other leaders; directing the Sunday morning Religious Education programs, overseeing coordination of Our Whole Lives (OWL) programming;  co-leading volunteer training and recruitment, working with the Senior Minister and other church leaders on faith development and multigenerational opportunities for children and youth, and supporting parents in assuming a role as religious educators of their children.

UUCSS is committed to fair compensation and offers health, retirement, life insurance, long term disability, and professional development funds. Salary will be commensurate with experience and UUA credentials for a Midsize I congregation in Geo Index 5, $49,350-56,950.

Cover letter and resumes should be sent to by August 31, 2019. (The deadline was extended.) Thank you for your interest! We look forward to hearing from you soon!
