After seven years of traveling with the military, Lisa’s father entered civilian life with the Bureau of Land Management in Idaho. There were good things about Idaho, especially skiing every weekend during the winter. The school system was pretty good too, something that was brought home after a short sojourn in Nebraska at a school with much lower standards. Georgetown University recruited from her high school and she entered the School of Foreign Service. It was not a good fit and switching to a biology major as a junior and working full time meant a long delay in graduating.
The culture at Georgetown was conservative. To meet more interesting people, she joined the DC Area Feminist Chorus, where Bev Abreu and Janet Hunt also sang and Deborah Weiner had recently been Director. She sang with them at a UUCSS Stonewall memorial service in 1999 and saw a notice for a Freethinkers group. Thinking that might be interesting, she came back multiple times to try to connect. Sadly, the group was mostly defunct, but Lisa enjoyed UUCSS and the young adult’s group with Laura Ellis and Eli Briggs, among others, and she’s stayed with us ever since.
Lisa has given the church a great deal, serving as a YRUU advisor, RE teacher, Treasurer, and Vice President for Finance. Currently she is on our church board as Vice President for Personnel, is backing up payroll administration, and finds time to work with the Junior Youth Group. In her spare time, Lisa likes to read and has been studying Korean since 2019, initially for a love of the script. While her nieces and nephews are far away and adults on their own, she likes to stay active in their lives. She is especially grateful for the auction as a way to connect, especially for someone with strong hermit tendencies. And if you do talk with her about anything in this spotlight, do notice the spark of delight and quick smile she has when telling a good story.
