Caroline grew up in the DC area. Her home church was St. Luke Lutheran in Silver Spring. The best part and the thing that stuck with her was singing in the choir. During her college year abroad year in Germany, she came to the conclusion she was an atheist.
Nonetheless, she still looked into churches in graduate school just for the opportunity to sing, eventually settling on a UU church in Hillsboro, Oregon. Caroline trained as a teacher at University of Oregon, but after a few years found that mainstream teaching really wasn’t for her. For the past six years, she has worked for a tutoring center, which was a much better fit.
In her local search for a choir to sing in, Caroline found UUCSS. From the beginning, Michael Holmes made her feel comfortable, and she once again had the opportunity to be among the “lovable weirdos” who find their ways into choral singing. She was also co-editor of the Uniter for four years. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, swimming, and walking her pittie, Bodie. Caroline likes most sports and was turned onto hockey by her partner, Dan. Her favorite teams are the Carolina Hurricanes and Maryland Black Bears junior hockey team. And then there are the Orioles: her sports one true love.
Caroline has wanderlust in her genes. Her father was in international development, as are two of her sisters, and her mom worked for National Geographic. In high school she studied abroad in Senegal and Italy. She has studied abroad for college and graduate work in Ghana and Germany and was an au pair in the Netherlands. She has friends all over the world. Sometime soon she and her husband Dan Garmat will be moving to the Netherlands to start a business. She’ll miss UUCSS, the choir, and the friendships she’s made here.
