jazz@uucss is a collaboration between the UUCSS Music Committee and jazz scholar, Bertrand Uberall. Our vision is to create an affordable, listener-friendly performance venue for jazz in the DC area, create new audiences for outstanding young jazz musicians, and foster connections between UUCSS and the local jazz community.
She was recently awarded a 2014 DownBeat Award for Graduate College Outstanding Performance: Vocal Soloist, and was a participant in the 2014 Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Program at the Kennedy Center in DC. Upon graduating with her Master of Music Degree from Howard University in 2014, she went on to become 1st runner up in the 2014 Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Jazz Competition at NJPAC in Newark, NJ. She was also the 1st place winner of the 2015 Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival Vocal Competition.
Shacara is currently an adjunct professor of music at Howard University, teaching jazz voice. Her future plans include expanding her career in music by becoming an international recording artist, and performing all over the world.
