Michael Knaapen has been the Religious Education Assistant at UUCSS since 2016. Although he holds a BFA in vocal performance, the closest he gets to a stage these days is mezzanine seats. Instead, he applies his liberal arts background at UUCSS by helping staff, families, children and youth pursue the Fourth Principle (a free and responsible search for truth and meaning). Between Sundays, Michael works at the Pulmonary Hypertension Association helping people with a rare lung disease find support and resources to improve and extend their lives. As a gay man, he cares deeply about the LGBTQ+ community and works as president of the LGBTQ Democrats of Montgomery County, producer of the annual Montgomery County Stonewall Commemoration, and a host of the radio show Inside OutLGBT Radio on WPFW 89.3FM to improve the lives of LGBTQ people in his neighborhood. Michael’s favorite things about UUCSS are the youth-led services in the early spring where the church’s teen groups – Coming of Age and Young Religious Unitarian Universalists (YRUU) – make the sanctuary their own for two incredible, insightful, funny, insightful and moving services.
