Repairing the World

Risk and Brokenness are the themes we’ll be exploring this March. Rev. Dr. Robert Harvey, Rector of Church of Our Savior, just a couple of blocks down New Hampshire Ave from UUCSS, preached this Sunday. Part of the topic was the task of Tikkun Olam ‘repairing the world.’ He looked at that ideal and what it might mean as an imperative for all people, bearing in mind that as the bumper sticker reminds us “minds are like parachutes. They only function when they are open.” As funny as that sounds, much of our polarized world today wouldn’t understand the deep wisdom behind that bumper sticker. Today it seems having an open mind is thought to be, at best, “wishy-washy” or at worst, some kind of heretic to be burned at the stake. Rev. Dr. Harvey’s mind was wide open as he and UUCSS learned more about each other.
