UUCSS committees Defending Democracy, Green Sanctuary and the Racial Justice Task Force are sponsoring an evening of phone banking at the church on behalf of a Florida ballot measure to restore voting rights to former felons in the state.
Many members of UUCSS have expressed interest in getting involved in voter mobilization efforts for the upcoming mid-term elections, and the Florida ballot initiative is one such way.
Florida along with Iowa and Kentucky have extreme policies of disenfranchising anyone with a felony conviction for life. It also ranks high among states that disproportionately suppress the voting rights of black people. According to the ACLU, approximately one in five black citizens in Florida is disenfranchised due to a prior conviction. Florida has 1.5 million former felons who cannot vote. Let’s work with UU Justice Florida for change.
